I mean, I've played relatively more CK2 and Vicky 2 than I have Deus Ex, Killing Floor, or Stardew Valley, but Hearts of Iron 4 is up there in my top 5 most played games. Battle plans are insanely useful for controlling your infantry units, while you micro your tanks and cars to get the encirclements your infantry can destroy. Less micro for your armies, as well, helps immensely.

The full fronts in lieu of stacks also helps to encapsulate the idea of total war, which is pretty fun. It makes your armies varied and interesting. It feels like there is a purpose to every unit. I think it comes from having more than just Men, Horses, and Cannons for your armies, and instead of creating a single ultimate stack to always use in every situation you make infantry to hold the line, motorized to close encirclement, tanks to break through lines, and planes to bomb the enemies. You might say this sort of thinking is better suited for CK2, EU4, or Vicky 2, but of those, only Vicky 2 actually has an interesting peacetime and wartime, whereas HoI4 has a very interesting wartime for a lackluster peacetime, and CK2 and EU4 are most interesting at war and are rather passive experiences when not warring. Oh, sure, it's mighty fun making divisions and having them march over your enemies, but I've always been a writer at heart, and craft my own little narratives to go along with my goal.

I, personally, don't care for the war stuff as much as most people might.

Plus you can get more civil wars, more techs, and maybe more unit types.

If the focus stays on war gameplay, forget earlier timelines.ġ933 works pretty fine in Darkest Hour, it's just slower for longer.Īnd I know for sure some people really, really enjoy the Great War mod and playing a "Grand Campaign" of 1911-1950.Įven if the focus is war, we can extend the timeline to get a bit more variety of war. TL DR If earlier start dates are wanted, HOI 4 must embrace more than the World War 2 focus. Now, if HOI 4 moves beyond the "War" focus, and embraces a broader EU4 or Vicky gameplay style, then earlier timelines are definitely desirable. I'm not saying these mechanics are not fun, but for a game about World War 2, they do not really matter.īecause of the game focus issues, I do not think a earlier timeline is plausible. For example, if the game started in 1930 and the player picked Germany, there would need to be internal election mechanics, a decently deep economic system that included consumer goods and markets, and various other systems. If the timeline goes backwards, HOI 4 moves away from a game focused on "War" and becomes a game that caters to different gameplay interests, such as economics, diplomacy, internal politics, etc. I personally would love that, but I do not think it will work for HOI 4. I'm seeing many threads about alt-history NF trees, and many of those threads have ideas about extending the game timeline backwards.
